Overview
Sustainable site design is not new. Many Air Force designers will find that they have been implementing these techniques for years out of a desire to promote the most aesthetically pleasing, intuitive and practical infrastructure at their installation. This toolkit is an acknowledgement of those practices and encouragement to learn about additional opportunities and alternatives for sustainable development.

Sustainable site design is founded in strategies to conceive and construct projects that limit the impact of development on the land while creating opportunities to improve morale. Perhaps the greatest benefits to sustainable site design are operational in nature. Reduced maintenance costs and improved efficiency will free funds and carbon credits to support mission requirements. Bases that are designed to encourage pedestrian circulation will develop Airmen that are more physically fit and prepared to accept the responsibilities and challenges awaiting them. Other operational benefits of sustainable site design involve force protection improvements and proper landscaping for airfields.
