As greenhouse gas restrictions become more stringent we will undoubtedly need methods to reduce the carbon footprint at each Air Force installation in an effort to balance the impact of mission related activities (i.e. aircraft flight).

The installation of bike racks is one of the most cost-efficient, sustainable strategies that can easily be implemented into an existing or future site. In addition to the health, environmental and mission related benefits mentioned above; bicycle use results in lower fuel expenses and relieves traffic congestion.

Site design considerations for bike racks should include a well lit, easily accessible and visible location. Potential strategies to further promote bicycle use include shower and changing facilities as well as covered bicycle storage as shown at Osan AB in figure 1.

 An expanded base-wide network for pedestrian or bicycle circulation will encourage this alternative transportation not just as a method for arriving to and from work but a primary resource for all daily activities.

Bicycle racks are also a potential method to achieve the intent of LEED SS Credit 4.2 if implemented in combination with shower and changing facilities.
