Grassed Swales |
![]() |
Grassed swales are shallow, vegetated channels designed to collect and
infiltrate stormwater runoff. Stormwater runoff is directed to a swale due
to its low elevation relative to the drainage area. The soil composition is
imperative to ensure both proper infiltration and limit the amount of water
retained in the swale itself. An appropriately chosen grass provides
effective sediment removal, reduces storm runoff velocity and has a sound
root structure minimizing the amount of replanting required. Check damns may
also be used in a grassed swale to further reduce runoff velocity and
promote pooling. Grassed swales may accumulate surface water during a storm
event however the water should infiltrate with in several hours to a few
days. Additional stormwater management practices may be required in addition
to grassed swales depending on specific site factors. Construction and
maintenance costs are relatively low to other stormwater control methods. In
addition, regular maintenance can usually be included with normal
landscaping activities.
